Physical Maps

The different types of physical maps vary in their degree of resolution.

The two low-resolution maps are the chromosomal map (a.k.a. cytogenetic map) and the cDNA map.

The two high-resolution maps are the contig map and macrorestriction map.

From this page, you can chose to look at low resolution maps or high resolution maps.

Top-down physical mapping (a) produces maps with few gaps, but map resolution may not allow location of specific genes. Bottom- up strategies (b) generate extremely detailed maps of small areas but leave many gaps. A combination of both approaches is being used.                                    http://www.genome.iastate.edu/edu/doe/fig9.html
